Microsoft’s MAI-DxO diagnostic AI reportedly achieved roughly 83% accuracy on complex medical cases, compared with 36% for generalist physicians who had access to reference materials. Those numbers come from simulated encounters built on curated NEJM case reports, not from hospital floors where real patients arrive with incomplete histories and ambiguous symptoms.
The gap widens further when reference materials are removed: generalist accuracy drops to around 22%, putting MAI-DxO’s performance nearly four times higher in that comparison. A separate evaluation using emergency-department case data showed the system reaching approximately 80% accuracy against roughly 47% for generalists. Microsoft’s own research page also reports 80% accuracy with its o3 configuration and 85.5% under a maximum-accuracy configuration, so the 83% figure reflects a specific benchmark comparison rather than a single universal result.
