A new security report brings a tough message for tech teams everywhere. In its 2026 Digital Defense Report, Microsoft warns that hackers are currently using artificial intelligence to outpace the people trying to defend computer networks. By speeding up the creation of viruses and finding system weaknesses faster, these criminals are gaining a big early advantage while security workers struggle to keep up with their speed.
According to the report, threat actors rely on AI to massively reduce the time and skill needed to discover software bugs. Finding a hidden flaw used to take a lot of effort and expertise. Now, modern automated tools can spot these weaknesses in record time.
The biggest issue is that fixing a bug is naturally slower than finding one. Security teams need time to test and send out software updates safely. Because of this built-in delay, attackers can easily gather up undiscovered weaknesses to use later.
