Microsoft showered investors with one of the largest cash returns on the market, but the real story is what that spending says about the tech giant’s future.
Over the last five years, Microsoft (MSFT) handed its owners $223 billion in cash, a figure so large it ranks as the 3rd highest among all U.S. companies. While that sum dwarfs the $5.8 billion returned by the median S&P 500 firm in absolute dollars, it equals just 6.0% of Microsoft’s entire market value—well below the 16.2% proportion returned by the median firm.
For an owner of the stock, which trades around $499.99 a share after underperforming the market over the last year, this torrent of cash raises a sharp question: With a total return that trailed the index over that five-year period, was this large payout a sign of extraordinary financial strength or a consolation prize for a business in a complex transition?
