Microsoft wants to turn Windows PCs into platforms capable of running artificial intelligence models and agents directly, reducing their reliance on the cloud. The group introduced new local models, dedicated security technology and the Nvidia-powered Surface Laptop Ultra, aiming to compete with Apple in embedded AI, amongst others.
Microsoft has unveiled several models capable of running locally on sufficiently powerful PCs, including Nvidia’s Nemotron and a V4 version of DeepSeek requiring at least 60 gigabytes of memory. The latter reportedly outperforms GPT-5 on certain programming and reasoning tasks. Copilot will also adopt a hybrid approach, using the cloud for complex operations and local models when cost or privacy is a priority.
