Microsoft President Brad Smith publicly voiced support for bringing in independent third-party institutions to conduct safety evaluations of artificial intelligence systems, ensuring that AI development remains within human control.

Smith made the remarks during an interview with Bloomberg Television while in New York for the United Nations General Assembly. At this year’s General Assembly, AI safety and how to build an effective global regulatory framework emerged as core topics of intensive discussion among world leaders and tech executives.

Smith noted that if AI safety remains the responsibility of just one or two organizations, progress will be severely limited. He emphasized that while model developers play a critical role, companies like Microsoft that provide the software layer, control AI agents, and monitor their behavior are equally indispensable.
