Microsoft, Google and logistics company DSV have joined the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance, or ZEMBA, according to ENGINE. The three companies joined the alliance as they look to lower emissions tied to their supply chains.
ZEMBA aggregates demand from cargo owners and conducts tenders for shipping services that rely on low- and zero-emission bunker fuels as a way to cut emissions.
Hapag-Lloyd used liquefied biomethane under the alliance’s first tender to provide emission reductions. The container liner also secured ZEMBA’s later e-fuel tender for 2027, together with North Sea Container Line, or NCL, in December 2025.
As part of that arrangement, Hapag-Lloyd intends to use e-methanol on one of its transoceanic trade lanes, while NCL will use green ammonia on a northern European route.
