Microsoft cloud services to phase out options for Two-Factor Authentication

The MTSU Information and Technology Division announced via email that Microsoft is phasing out text message and phone call options for Two-Factor Authentication.

This will change how students, faculty and staff access university-wide sites like Pipeline, Canvas, and MTMail.

“Microsoft is making a worldwide security change that will affect how you sign into your MTSU account for cloud services such as Canvas, Pipeline, MTMail, etc,” said the email from ITD.

ITD urges users to make the change before Nov. 1 to avoid problems with signing in. As of Feb. 1, 2027, texts and calls will not be a prompted option through Microsoft.

Other than the Microsoft app, students can opt to set up a passkey, which uses facial recognition or fingerprint scans on approved personal devices to sign in.

Users can also pay for a physical Hardware Security Key. ITD recommends four options that span from $29 to $58 before fees.
