GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Microsoft is buying additional property in Gaines Township as it works to get approval for a proposed data center, the township’s development director says.

Microsoft is working to buy 57.8 acres of land at 4100 68th St., located to the north of the 356 acres it already owns, Gaines Township Development Director Dan Wells confirmed to News 8. He said the land was formally part of the Steelcase wood plant site.

Microsoft will likely include the new property in its rezoning application. It has asked the township to rezone a 40-acre parcel of the property, which it bought from Republic National Distributing Co. in 2024, from development-large scale plan to light industrial. The rest of the property it owns in that area, which it bought from Steelcase in 2024, is already zoned as light industrial.

The township’s planning commission is set to discuss the rezoning request during its meeting…
