Microsoft and NVIDIA announced the standardization of RTX Mega Geometry technologies as part of the DirectX 12 graphics API update. Clustered Geometry and Partitioned Top-Level Acceleration Structure (PTLAS) features are now available in the DirectX Agility SDK preview with support for the HLSL 6.10 shader model. These tools enable the construction of ray tracing acceleration structures directly on the GPU, eliminating synchronization delays between CPU и GPUAs a result, game engines can significantly speed up the processing of complex scenes with dynamically changing levels of detail, animated models, and procedurally generated objects within a single frame budget. Practical applications of this technology have already been implemented in projects like Gears of War: E-Day by The Coalition and CONTROL Resonant by Remedy Entertainment, where real-time ray tracing interacts directly with highly detailed Nanite geometry without the use of simplified low-poly proxy models.
The Clustered Geometry engine solves the problem of slow processing of unorganized polygon sets when constructing lower-level BLAS structures. Now, geometry is pre-divided into spatially organized clusters using…
