Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) are facing possible new obligations in Europe as regulators move to address the leverage that major cloud providers have over customers, according to a report.
The European Commission’s review focuses on whether AWS and Azure give businesses an important route to reach customers and whether switching between providers can be difficult because of established ecosystems and costs.
That distinction could bring cloud computing deeper into the EU’s Digital Markets Act. A designation would expose the services to requirements covering interoperability, customer lock-in and the treatment of rival offerings.
