Microsoft (MSFT, Financials) is taking a cautious stance on the race toward superintelligence, with the head of its artificial intelligence unit warning that the technology poses significant risks if not carefully controlled.

Mustafa Suleyman, who leads Microsoft’s AI efforts, said superintelligence systems that surpass human-level intelligence comes with a great deal of risk and should not be released until developers are confident it can be contained and aligned with human values. He made the remarks in an interview with Bloomberg, emphasizing that safety must come before speed.

Suleyman’s comments come as major technology companies accelerate investment in increasingly powerful AI systems. Microsoft joined the push toward superintelligence earlier this year, even as hundreds of business and technology leaders worldwide called for a halt to its development, citing fears ranging from economic disruption to existential risk.
