Meet the HSC student who developed an AI model to detect breast cancer

“Only an accuracy of 70.6 percent was achieved, which is a bit high, but definitely not suitable for clinical use.”

Michaela’s model also provided a finding that was supported by recent research.

“My AI model found that the gene transferrin (essential for transporting iron throughout the body) has a potentially significant impact on the development of breast cancer and the gene dysregulation associated with breast cancer. I found all this secondary research that confirmed my model’s findings.

“I couldn’t believe it. I thought, ‘Oh my God, oh my God.’ I woke up my mother!”

The project lasted nine months. “I call it my little baby,” Michaela said.

Michaela has a lifelong passion for STEM. When she was eight years old, she misplaced a boys’ periodic table T-shirt in the girls’ section of a clothing store because, as she said, “Why do we perpetuate these gender biases?”
