Martin Scorsese’s announcement that he had invested in an AI company and used the technology to create storyboards has sparked a backlash from colleagues in the film industry.
The New York Times reported that in 2025, Scorsese was named a partner and advisor to Black Forest Labs, a Germany-based company specializing in generative text-to-image AI.
Scorsese said in a statement to The New York Times: “I’m interested in the intersection of technology and storytelling and seeing how it can expand the boundaries of creativity to create deeper and richer experiences for audiences. Remember, cinema is a young medium, only about 125 years old, so we need to be open to how it can evolve.”
