Loudoun County, Amazon reach deal to withdraw data center project on GW campus in Ashburn – WTOP News

Loudoun County, Virginia, has reached an agreement with Amazon regarding the future land use of the George Washington University’s Science and Technology Campus in Ashburn: It will not be used for four new data centers.

The agreement, called Project Potomac Promise, will see Amazon donate 25 acres of land with a fair market value of approximately $65 million to Loudoun County. The land will be used for a new community arts center and indoor sports facility.

According to the release, the land will become a district that prohibits data centers and related infrastructure, even by special exception. Amazon also committed to rezoning the remaining land for mixed-use development, including attainable and market-rate housing.

This agreement was driven in part by Loudoun’s housing needs. In addition, Amazon will contribute $5 million to the county’s Housing Fund to support countywide efforts.
