AMD is reportedly planning to change the naming convention for its next generation Zen 5 mobile processors, similar to what Intel did with its latest ultra core Meteor Lake processors. According to a leak from the Bilibili forums by Golden Pig, AMD is looking to rebrand its Ryzen nomenclature to include “Ryzen AI” with a 300 numbering scheme after the name. This change could be in response to the need to highlight the neural processing unit in its chips, especially with the emergence of Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC with AI technology.
While there were initial rumors suggesting AMD might use a 100 numbering scheme for its new processors, the latest leak indicates that the company has opted to skip the 100 and 200 numbering schemes and go straight to 300. This move could be a strategic decision by AMD to stay ahead of Intel’s upcoming Lake/Nomenclature Arrow Lake processors, which are expected to adopt a lower 200 numbering scheme.
AMD has a history of adopting naming conventions similar to its competitors, as seen in the motherboard space where AMD’s chipset names mirror those of Intel’s counterparts. The company even caused Intel to adjust its chipset naming scheme to avoid confusion when it “borrowed” the B650 name for its chipsets.
The leak suggests that AMD will rename its upcoming Ryzen processors under the Ryzen AI branding, starting with the Strix Point lineup, which will feature the XDNA NPU. This new nomenclature is expected to be expanded to cover other Ryzen architectures with NPUs, such as Strix Halo.
Strix Point is the codename for AMD’s next-generation Ryzen mobile processors, set to succeed the current Ryzen 8040 series. These processors will introduce the Zen 5 CPU architecture, RDNA 3.5 graphics, and an XDNA2 NPU with around 30 TOPS of performance. Moreover, Halo Strix is AMD’s high-performance mobile APU designed to compete with top-tier SoC silicon like Apple’s M3/M4 processors.
The change in nomenclature and focus on AI technology in AMD’s upcoming processors align with industry trends towards more intelligent and efficient computing solutions.
