LAPORTE, Ind. (WNDU) – The LaPorte Common Council voted Monday night in favor of a second data center campus for Microsoft.
The council approved bringing about 1,000 acres of farmland under the city boundary and rezoning the land to light industrial. The move puts Microsoft one step closer to building its data center campus on about 1,300 acres in LaPorte.
Construction is already underway on Microsoft’s first LaPorte data center off Boyd Boulevard. The council approved annexing the acreage next to Microsoft’s data center campus under construction near U.S. 35 and State Road 4.
Microsoft still has to finalize the purchase of much of the property, but the company is already moving forward with expansion plans. The company said it wants to add 11 more data center buildings on top of the six already under construction.
