$9.3 Billion in Two Years: The Orders That Changed the Debate
Cisco’s President and Chief Product Officer Jeetu Patel has a simple response to the argument that the AI data center build-out is an overbuild: the company he helps run went from zero to $9.3 billion in AI infrastructure orders in two years, and demand is still outrunning supply.
Speaking on the Y Combinator Startup Podcast, Patel laid out the numbers with unusual precision. In the first year Cisco began selling to hyperscalers for AI workloads, it guided the market to $1 billion in orders and finished with $2.3 billion. Year two, the company guided to roughly $5 billion—and closed at $9 billion.
“The quarter we just reported a month ago, we ended up at $9.3 billion,” Patel said. The figure represents orders taken, not revenue recognized, but he frames it as material against Cisco’s $63 billion in total revenue.
