Is Trump’s new AI framework an attempt to consolidate power?

On Friday, the Trump administration released its recommendations to Congress on national policy regarding artificial intelligence. The four-page bulleted document outlines general ideas for a legal framework. While at first glance these appear to be vague calls for security and freedom of expression, some AI ethics experts cry foul.

The guidelines establish some protections for the public while allowing AI companies to innovate without the “burden” of strict guardrails. The six goals require requirements for the safety of children. At the same time, it’s about why residents shouldn’t pay higher electricity prices to expand data centers, how the country can develop an AI-friendly workforce, and what state and federal regulations for technology should look like. The framework states that Congress should ensure that state laws “do not regulate areas that are more appropriate for the federal government or conflict with the United States national strategy for achieving global AI….”
