Some may recall that in January 2025, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang predicted a long wait, up to 30 years, for “very useful” quantum computers. That comment roiled quantum stocks across the board, with IonQ, Inc. (NYSE:IONQ) shares plunging about 40% in their worst single-day drop.
To be fair, commercially useful, fault-tolerant, quantum computers, have not arrived yet. But less than two years later, IonQ has secured a prominent role in Nvidia’s push to develop useful hybrid quantum-classical systems. IonQ said on September 23 that its Superion 256 will become the first on-premise quantum processor deployed at Nvidia’s Accelerated Quantum Research Center (NVAQC). The deployment is planned for 2027.
That’s a big deal.

IonQ’s Roadmap Just Got Stronger
The Nvidia partnership provides a tangible testing ground for IonQ’s Superion architecture. Nvidia will place IonQ, Inc. (NYSE:IONQ)’s quantum processing unit alongside conventional accelerated computing hardware. That will happen in a setting specifically designed to develop large-scale hybrid systems. The research will target applications including financial optimization, materials science and computational chemistry.
IonQ introduced Superion 256 on September 8, and the company has begun accepting orders. First customer…
