Introducing new updates to the AWS Well-Architected Framework guidance | Amazon Web Services



The updated AWS Well-Architected Framework is now available with expanded guidance on six pillars: Operational excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance efficiency, Cost optimization, and Sustainability. This release includes more prescriptive recommendations and steps for reusable architecture patterns. The Well-Architected Framework helps customers improve their cloud workloads with best practices.

Since its inception in 2012, the Framework has evolved over the years, with updates and enhancements. The latest release includes updates for services like Amazon CloudWatch, Amazon CodeGuru Security, and Amazon Elastic Container Service (Amazon ECS). Each pillar, including Operational Excellence, Security, Reliability, Performance Efficiency, Cost Optimization, and Sustainability, has been updated with new best practices and guidance.

The Operational Excellence Pillar, for example, has updated 30 best practices, incorporating observability and generative AI capabilities. The Security Pillar now includes 28 best practices with strong implementation guidance. The Reliability Pillar has updates on AWS Resilience Hub and Amazon Route 53. Performance Efficiency and Cost Optimization Pillars have also been enhanced with the latest guidance and resources.

The Sustainability Pillar, added in 2021, has 18 updated best practices focusing on sustainability aspects. The Framework guide now includes 105 best practices overall, updated in various languages. With this release, 95% of existing best practices have been updated, showing a dedication to evolving guidance. The updates cover operational excellence, security, performance efficiency, cost optimization, and sustainability.

Users can access these updates through the AWS Well-Architected Tool, which helps review workloads and adhere to the Framework guidance. The community at AWS re:Publishing provides support and answers questions regarding new best practices. This latest version of the AWS Well-Architected Framework aims to provide customers with comprehensive guidance to improve their cloud solutions.
