Intel showcased the chip industry’s first fully integrated optical computing interconnect chiplet for use in artificial intelligence. The chiplet, known as OCI, is packaged alongside an Intel CPU and runs live data. It supports 64 channels of 32GB per second data transmission over 100 meters of optical fiber, enabling AI workloads to run at higher bandwidths with lower power consumption and longer range. The new OCI chiplet uses about one-third the power compared to other optical transceiver modules.

Intel executive Thomas Liljeberg stated that the increasing movement of data between servers is straining current data center infrastructure, and current solutions are nearing the limits of electrical I/O performance. However, Intel’s innovative system allows customers to seamlessly integrate packaged silicon photonics interconnect solutions into next-generation computing systems.

Following the announcement, Intel’s stock fell 0.6% in Wednesday afternoon trading.
