Instead of taking your job away, AI could change it

In search of a better understanding of our current situation, I recently set out to find AI users outside of the technology industry. I asked the CEO of a nonprofit journalism organization how he uses AI, and he showed me a web-based tool he vibecoded with Claude Code, Anthropic’s programming agent. Every morning, the tool automatically summarizes higher education articles and suggests potential trends and angles that may warrant further investigation. A briefing will then be emailed to him and his senior editors. A recent briefing highlighted a Los Angeles Just Story about a data breach against a popular learning management system called Canvas. It suggested that the editors consider submitting a Freedom of Information Act request to the affected public school systems, requesting correspondence with the system’s parent company. “Did anyone raise any red flags?” it asked. The tool is hardly insightful, and the CEO said that he would “never try to make it a publicly available tool…”
