Singer-songwriter and social media sensation Fred Roberts may only be 23 years old, but the world of content creation has changed radically since his career began. Now that he has a total of 100,000 followers on social media, he headlines festivals, makes music videos and travels the world. But he still finds the time to keep fans updated and recruit new ones, all from the phone in his pocket.
“When I started, TikTok was just emerging,” he says. “The first covers I posted on Instagram were found by people through the Explore page. There was no vertical feed, you were much less likely to be discovered. I started editing on the computer, no one was really doing it on the phone. And then two or three years later, there are so many more things you can do. The front cameras have gotten so much better – you can film a video with the front camera that’s basically professional quality.”
