IBM is betting that the factory floor, not the laboratory, will decide its quantum future. A joint commitment with the US government worth two billion US dollars — matched by an additional one billion from IBM’s own coffers — is bankrolling an industrial-scale push into quantum hardware, anchored by a 300-millimeter wafer facility in Albany, New York.

The market’s response was muted. The stock added 0.5 percent to trade at 200.95 euros, a modest move that reflects the tug-of-war in investor sentiment: long-term technological promise on one side, persistent operational drag on the other. Pre-market indications put the shares at 201.00 euros, with the equity still down roughly 23 percent since the start of the year.
