Just days after IBM CEO Arvind Krishna told CNN he expected to bring in more recent graduates than in previous years, the company began notifying employees of thousands of job cuts tied to a broad restructuring. The cuts come amid IBM’s push to double down on AI and automation, a move now raising questions about the company’s true commitment to young workers.

Krishna’s earlier comments positioned IBM as a rare counterweight in a labor market clouded by cuts. “People are talking about either layoffs or freezing hiring, but I actually want to say that we are the opposite,” he said in the CNN interview. He added that IBM planned to expand its hiring of college graduates over the next 12 months.
