ALBANY — The Trump administration is awarding IBM and GlobalFoundries nearly $1.4 billion in grants for quantum computing and IBM says the development will lead to a major expansion of its presence in the area.
IBM will receive a $1 billion grant, and GlobalFoundries, based in Saratoga County, will receive $375 million.
IBM said in its own news release Thursday that the grant would be used, along with $1 billion in cash from the company, to build its own standalone quantum computing chip manufacturing company, or foundry, in Albany. It will be called Anderon.
“From the start, Anderon will be prepared to serve as the anchor for a national ecosystem for quantum wafer manufacturing, ensuring IBM and other quantum companies have the ability to catalyze the production of scalable quantum technologies within the United States,” IBM wrote in a release.
