As the fifth annual edition World Quantum Day begins April 14, researchers say the focus of their efforts is shifting from hardware experimentation to integrating quantum systems into broader computing environments alongside traditional artificial intelligence and supercomputers.

A team at Argonne National Laboratory is working to incorporate quantum computingg into existing high-performance computing workflows. Instead of treating quantum as a standalone technology, the emphasis is on building heterogeneous systems that combine CPUs, graphics processing units, artificial intelligence and quantum accelerators, according to Laura Schultz (pictured), project leader for quantum innovation.

“Quantum technology presents itself as a new form of computing for very specific workloads,” he said, noting that his team’s goal is to give scientists “results they haven’t been able to achieve before.”
