Artificial intelligence is making Australian news sources “increasingly invisible” as algorithms favor international media giants over local journalism, according to a new study.
The study, authored by Timothy Koskie of the University of Sydney’s Center for AI, Trust and Governance, focused on results from Microsoft’s Copilot – an AI assistant built into modern Windows installations by default.
Across 434 AI-generated news summaries, the research found that Copilot “systematically favored international media over Australian sources.”
Using seven different prompts recommended by Copilot itself (including “What are the most important health or medical news updates for this week” and “What are the most important global news stories today”), only about one in five answers included links to Australian media.
