Davos in January was a real eye-catcher. US President Donald Trump has belittled European leaders and threatened to conquer Greenland. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rallied stunned allies to acknowledge the shattered world order. And the financiers, corporate titans and political elite of a charismatic technology leader watched his every word. His message was existential.

Dario Amodei, the chief executive of artificial intelligence giant Anthropic, was led from stage to stage through the Swiss Alpine village, painting a “nightmare” scenario in which around 10 million people would enjoy half of the world’s economic growth and warning that automation for office jobs was on the way. The first to be caught up in the knowledge worker Armageddon in just six to twelve months would be software engineers.
