Google’s NotebookLM has been upgraded to be an even more intelligent assistant and improved fact-checker

Google is updating its NotebookLM writing assistant with enhanced performance and new features, including compatibility with the Gemini 1.5 Pro model AI. This collaboration allows the assistant to better understand context by asking questions about images, charts, and diagrams at their source. While it is unclear if this integration will enable longer text messages or more detailed responses, Google’s AI can process context windows of up to a million tokens. The prompts will now include inline citations that link directly to source documents for verification, especially important due to AI hallucinations being a persistent issue.

Improved feed support now includes Google Slides and web URLs, in addition to PDF files, text files, and Google Docs. A new feature called Notebook Guide allows users to organize data into specific formats like FAQs or study guides. Changes not initially mentioned include the ability to have up to 50 sources per project, each with up to 500,000 words, a significant improvement from the previous limit of five sources at a time.

Raiza Martin, senior product manager at Google Labs, clarified that NotebookLM is a closed system, meaning it does not perform web searches beyond the user-provided information. The latest update is now available in over 200 countries and territories and can be tested on the official website. While the tool may still have some quirks, such as URL feed features not working in some demos, it generally functions well.

For business users, TechRadar’s list of the best business laptops for 2024 may be helpful in utilizing the assistant effectively. The update brings exciting new capabilities to NotebookLM, making it a valuable tool for writers and researchers looking to streamline their workflow.
