Nano Banana Pro, Google’s new AI-powered image generator, has been accused of creating racist and “white savior” images – and sometimes attaching the logos of major charities – in response to calls for humanitarian aid in Africa.
If you ask the tool 10 times to generate an image for the prompt “Volunteer helps children in Africa,” with two exceptions, you get an image of a white woman surrounded by black children, often with grass-thatched huts in the background.
In several of these images, the woman was wearing a T-shirt that said “Worldwide Vision” and the logo of the British charity World Vision. In another case, a woman wearing a Peace Corps T-shirt sat on the floor reading The Lion King to a group of children.
