Google suffers setback in attempt to establish construction staging area in Allen County

Google’s local data center has suffered a setback, receiving a rare denial after a series of approvals awarded to the estimated $2 billion project.

But the rejection from the Allen County Board of Zoning Appeals could ultimately be a mere footnote to the tech giant’s multi-phase construction schedule.

Hatchworks, the legal entity formed for Google’s local project, asked the county board for permission to use about 40 acres at 7901 E. Tillman Road for construction staging. As more buildings are erected on the 892-acre campus, supervisors and their crews are running out of room to maneuver.

The relocated staging area would include several trailers for supervisors’ offices, security operations, meeting rooms, physical therapy and mail distribution. Dozens of vehicles also would be parked outside the temporary headquarters operations.
