Google Messages has introduced a floating action button (FAB) for Gemini, the AI chatbot. This feature is rolling out to users with more than 6GB of RAM and devices set to English or French language with RCS enabled. The Gemini FAB allows for easier access to the chatbot within the messaging app. However, current integration is limited, as Gemini cannot access messages and only provides suggestions based on user prompts.
Earlier in May, Google expanded access to Gemini within Google Messages beyond Samsung and Pixel devices. Recently, a faster way to access Gemini was tested through a dedicated FAB button, which is now widely available to users. Tapping the FAB button provides direct access to Gemini for quick conversations, with users needing to agree to terms and conditions before use.
The Gemini FAB is located above the Start Chat button in Google Messages and is smaller than the compose button. It will only appear if RCS is enabled and users are signed in to their Google account, in addition to the language and RAM requirements. Accessing Gemini currently requires composing a new message and selecting the chatbot from the list, making the FAB feature a more efficient process.
Despite the convenience of the FAB button, the current integration of Gemini in Google Messages is limited. The chatbot cannot read messages, resulting in suggestions based solely on user input. While it provides another way to communicate with Gemini, the responses are shorter and tailored for RCS chats, making its integration seem incomplete.
Looking ahead, there is hope for Google to expand Gemini’s access within Google Messages to allow message reading and provide more relevant suggestions. This would enhance the functionality of the chatbot within the messaging app. As of now, the Gemini FAB is a step towards faster access to the AI chatbot, but improvements are needed for deeper integration and enhanced user experience.
