The email app used by over 3 billion people is enabling new artificial intelligence features by default. Here’s how to turn them off.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) — Gmail is officially entering the “Gemini Era,” with Google turning on numerous AI tools by default in the app that over 3 billion people use, the company said in a blog post Thursday.

New features being added to Gmail include AI overviews, which have appeared at the top of Google search results since May 2024. Google said the overview will allow users to type questions into Gmail’s search bar to find emails instead of wading through threads with dozens of answers. The company also announced AI capabilities for writing and responding to emails, as well as an “AI Inbox” that Google says will serve as a personalized briefing.
