Generative AI in gaming is here, but is encountering resistance from gamers – and developers

Last week, Nvidia unveiled its new graphics upscaling technology DLSS 5, with a new feature that gave AI makeovers to in-game character models. Her completely different appearance, which made her look like the “yassified” style popular in cheap mobile games, sparked backlash from the public – not just out of disgust at her appearance, but because it would change the work that game developers were doing without her input.

Players are rebelling against the use of generative AI in their games, especially when it is not disclosed. This makes it difficult to use, whether in developing code and graphics when creating games, or in player-related materials such as generating dialogue with non-player characters in real time in response to your decisions.

Back in January, Game Developers Conference planners released their annual State of the Games Industry Report for 2026, in which 52% of respondents said their company was using generative AI, although only 36% said they were using it…
