Game of Thrones and Euphoria get age ratings as BBFC uses new AI tool

TV shows such as Game of Thrones and Euphoria have received age ratings for the first time in the UK after the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) launched an AI content rating tool.

The BBFC has developed a tool to identify content that causes compliance issues, such as violence, nudity and foul language. The marked scenes are then handed over to BBFC staff for human review.

The BBFC announced on Wednesday that the technology had made its debut, classifying the entire UK catalog of HBO Max, the Netflix rival whose shows include multi-award-winning series The Sopranos, as well as The Wire, The Last of Us and The Pitt.

As a result, all HBO Max titles received a BBFC rating for the platform’s launch in the UK last month – with Game of Thrones and Euphoria receiving an overall rating of 18, although some individual episodes received a rating of 15.
