Federal Judge Rules on IBM Lawsuit: Allows Village of Endicott to Proceed with Lawsuit

A federal judge has ruled that the Village of Endicott can move forward with its lawsuit against IBM over alleged contamination of municipal drinking water wells with PFAS and 1,4-dioxane, marking a key development in a years-long environmental dispute.

The ruling allows the village, known as the “Birthplace of IBM,” to proceed with federal CERCLA cost-recovery claims as well as related state law claims tied to pollution in wells 5 and 28. The case now moves into the discovery phase, where both sides can gather evidence.

According to the village, IBM operated a large manufacturing campus in Endicott for more than a century and is accused of releasing hazardous substances into the groundwater through spills, leaks, and improper disposal practices.
