Fashion designers are experimenting with AI, but not everyone is a fan of it

AI is changing the way fashion designers create. From cleaning up administrative back-end systems to quickly tracking trend forecasts to helping generate ideas for collections.

However, not everyone in the fashion industry is convinced that this is the way forward.

Croatian-born, Melbourne-based designer Karla Špetić experimented with AI for her latest collection, which she presented at the Melbourne Fashion Festival.

She says she has mixed feelings about the technology.

“Like most people, I have all kinds of feelings about AI,” says Špetić, who is known for her romantic silhouettes with a whimsical undertone.

“Using AI as a tool rather than a replacement in the fashion industry can be really powerful. When used intentionally it can be great, but I don’t think it could ever replace the instinct or lived experience that you bring to your work and your brand as a creative.”
