Rutgers-led research leads to autonomous intelligent systems that enable robust 3D printing in space, war and disaster zones

Research led by Rutgers engineers has shown how artificial intelligence (AI) can solve two of manufacturing’s biggest challenges.

In two separate studies led by Rajiv Malhotra, an associate professor in the Rutgers School of Engineering’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, researchers have shown how intelligent autonomous systems can make 3D printing reliable in extreme environments such as space and war zones, and how AI can significantly accelerate innovation in manufacturing by reducing the need for costly experimentation.

Manufacturing engineer Rajiv Malhotra shares AI innovations that could accelerate development in industries such as aerospace, automotive, electronics and defense.

A study published in the Journal of Manufacturing Processes focuses on what Malhotra calls…
