Elon Musk wants to launch 1 million AI satellites into space. Here’s how SpaceX could do it

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk provided more details about his company’s planned data centers in space ahead of Thursday’s (June 11) highly anticipated initial public offering that is expected to make him a trillionaire.

A new half-hour video offers a typical insight Elon Musk Fireside chat about where the billionaire founder comes from SpaceX would like to use its technology next. In the video Posted on X On Monday (June 8), Musk described the launch of AI satellites with “lots of solar cells” as well as emitters and high-speed optical links (lasers) for communications. SpaceX also expects to have an AI satellite-focused manufacturing facility operational by the end of next year, which will be “operated at a reasonable volume,” Musk said. “So if someone wants to work on AI satellites, this will be kind of the hub for that.”

These companies agree that developing AI capabilities requires space because data centers on Earth no longer have the physical space to host them and lack community support.
