Disciplinary referral for lawyer caught using AI

Because Supreme Court of Victoria Justice Kristen Walker had “serious concerns” about her conduct surrounding the possible use of artificial intelligence, she referred a lawyer to the Legal Services Commissioner for an investigation.

The attorney was not named in Justice Walker’s decision, but Dib & Associates Lawyers was listed as representing the applicant.

“It is unacceptable for lawyers or barristers to use artificial intelligence in the preparation of court documents unless the outcome of that use is independently and thoroughly verified,” Judge Walker said.

Judge Walker said she found that several quotations in the complainant’s material could not be found in the cases from which they were alleged to have come.
