A Racine County community does not appear to be interested in pursuing a Microsoft data center. Real estate developer Ken Nelson pitched the idea to Yorkville’s village board and plan commission Monday night. Microsoft recently backed out of plans to build a data center in nearby Caledonia. Nelson said Yorkville could serve as a “backup” site and reap in the benefits of millions of dollars in tax revenue. However, Yorkville village president Douglas Nelson said the village’s residents would rather maintain a “rural atmosphere.” Microsoft is already working on a data center site in Mount Pleasant in Racine County. In a statement to 12 News on Monday night, Microsoft said it is not considering a data center development in Yorkville.
