Kylie Moore-Gilbert (Commentary, 27/5) is right to note that AI has significantly impacted the teaching and assessment of some university degrees. However, as a graduate of a bachelor’s or arts degree, I know that there is at least one significant exception. Even in the first year of college, the arts degree requires a level of critical thinking, originality, and personal style that AI models like ChatGPT cannot produce. For many years the arts were ridiculed as a waste of time with no real career prospects.
