IBM has announced the approval of its acquisition of StreamSets and webMethods from Software AG, valued at €2.13 billion. This strategic move is aimed at bolstering IBM’s data and artificial intelligence platform with advanced data ingestion and integration capabilities.

Software AG, on the other hand, is shifting its focus towards subscription and SaaS business, reporting a total sales of EUR 1 billion in 2023, with subscriptions and SaaS accounting for 65 percent of product sales. By acquiring StreamSets and webMethods, IBM aims to enhance its Watson data and AI platform with cutting-edge technologies that will empower enterprises to scale integrations effectively, leveraging data and AI to manage application growth and complexity.

StreamSets will bring enhanced data ingestion capabilities to IBM’s data and AI platform, while webMethods will introduce Integration Platform as a Service (iPaaS) capabilities to IBM’s automation solutions. This acquisition is seen as critical for IBM as it helps clients transform complexities into competitive advantages, according to Dinesh Nirmal, Senior Vice President of Products at IBM Software.

With the rapid rise of Generative AI expected to drive the creation of one billion new apps by 2028, effective data and application integration solutions are crucial for organizations undergoing digital transformation. StreamSets and webMethods, currently serving over 1,500 enterprises, will provide essential integration technologies for next-generation AI applications requiring end-to-end data and connectivity.

StreamSets will enhance IBM’s Data Fabric and Data Integration capabilities by enabling the design of streaming data pipelines, complementing existing solutions such as IBM DataStage and Databand. Its real-time, cloud-based data ingestion capabilities will be integrated into watsonx.data as a premium feature, supporting hybrid, multicloud deployments across major hyperscalers and on-premises environments.

On the other hand, webMethods will help organizations manage complex systems, applications, and data silos through its iPaaS offering, allowing for unified integration flows across multiple environments. IBM plans to extend webMethods iPaaS to support its integration products, enabling clients to build modern, seamless applications and services across various integration patterns including applications, APIs, events, and B2B.

In conclusion, the acquisition of StreamSets and webMethods by IBM signifies a strategic move to enhance its data and AI platform with advanced integration capabilities, catering to the evolving needs of enterprises in the digital age. This acquisition is expected to drive growth in the integration software market, exceeding $18 billion by 2027, and empower clients to innovate and streamline operations across hybrid and multicloud environments.
