Illegal waste dumping in the UK is no longer a minor nuisance. It is increasingly taking place on an industrial scale, with serious consequences.
The reported dumping of around 30,000 tonnes of waste at a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Leicestershire is a recent example of how serious the problem has become. Similar concerns were recently raised at the large illegal dump near Kidlington, Oxfordshire, where shredded mixed waste was dumped near waterways. These are signs of a broader waste crime economy that harms land, water and communities while passing the bill onto the public.
The House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee estimated that waste crime costs the UK economy around £1 billion a year.
Part of the problem is that when large fly dumps are discovered, it can be difficult to identify the original source.
Digital technologies and geointelligence are becoming increasingly important here.
