Today, Iain Morris at Light Reading published an interesting article suggesting that Nokia and NVIDIA could be natural partners in Musk’s plan to colonize Earth. I think he makes a good point, although I would look at the opportunity from a different angle.
Nokia may have a much better chance of winning this business by helping SpaceX build a network than by trying to sell Musk a conventional radio system.
As I wrote last week, SpaceX is reportedly talking to tower companies about access to as many as 80,000 sites in the United States. That is roughly the size of the macro site footprint of one of the three major US operators. While everyone is discussing what the tower companies could earn, another enormous contract is somewhere in this story. Somebody has to supply, install, integrate, and operate the radio equipment.
Nokia would certainly love that contract. But Musk has a rather annoying habit of building things himself.
