Spirit Airlines may no longer be taking to the skies, but the digital footprint created by its workforce over the years has emerged as a multimillion-dollar commodity.
Google secured the winning bid to acquire the defunct carrier’s enterprise database at a bankruptcy auction, placing a winning bid of $10 million – $2.5 million above the runner-up offer. Spirit grounded its fleet and entered bankruptcy proceedings last May following severe financial distress.
The repository acquired by Google contains approximately 100 million emails, 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, tens of millions of lines of code, along with operational logs, spreadsheets, and calendar entries generated throughout Spirit’s history. According to Google, the corporate records will be used to refine its commercial products and train artificial intelligence models.
