Anyone in the virtualization market who currently speaks of “predictable costs” often really means: preferably not another VMware surprise. Citrix is trying to use exactly this climate for a return of XenServer to the general server market. XenServer 9 brings a modernized technical base, NUMA optimizations, Secure Boot, and a revised operating system for the privileged control domain. However, the release status is less clear than it first sounds. The Register reports that Citrix released XenServer 9 on July 1, 2026. The official XenServer pages at the same time still explicitly describe the version as a public preview before the full release later in 2026. At the current time, it therefore should not yet be described as a regularly available production release.
