In a frightening sign of how AI is transforming cyberattacks, state-sponsored Chinese hackers allegedly used Anthropic’s AI coding tool to attempt to infiltrate about 30 global targets, the company said.
“The operation targeted major technology companies, financial institutions, chemical companies and government agencies,” Anthropic added, noting that the attacks “were successful in a few cases.” Notably, this is “the first documented case in which an agent-based AI has succeeded in gaining access to verified, high-value intelligence collection targets, including major technology corporations and government agencies,” the company’s report continued.
