China Rejects Anthropic’s AI Slowdown as Amazon Keeps a  Billion Financing Option

China rejected Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s proposal to slow the frontier of artificial intelligence on Sept. 14, turning a safety argument into a geopolitical problem for a private company valued at $965 billion. For Amazon shareholders, the immediate issue is narrower: Beijing’s words do not alter the AWS contract, but they weaken a premise behind the global coordination Amodei says advanced AI will require.

Asked about Amodei and other U.S. technology leaders at a regular briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said parties should pursue open and inclusive AI development for the common good. Spreading threat narratives and engaging in confrontation and “vicious competition” would disrupt global AI governance and benefit no party, Guo said in the ministry’s Chinese-language transcript.
